Arts Council England
Digital Culture

Identifying best practice around use of digital technology, and the positive impact it can have, for arts and cultural organisations.

Challenge

MTM were commissioned by Arts Council England, and innovation foundation Nesta, to understand the impact of funding strategies that aimed to raise digital skills levels and adoption of digital technology across the arts and cultural sector in the UK.

Approach

MTM ran five waves of this quantitative research study over seven years (2013-2019), to track arts and cultural organisations’ usage, behaviours and attitudes around digital technology.  We created a nationally representative sample of organisations of all sizes, artforms and categories and conducted analysis at both an aggregate and longitudinal level to understand how individual organisations as well as the sector were evolving.

Outcome

This study has informed funding and development strategy for the sector via key papers such as Culture is Digital, and initiatives such as the Digital Culture Network – launched in 2019 to provide practical support to arts and cultural organisations in implementing some of the best practice we identified.
