MTM surveyed Japanese app and game developers to understand how they perceive existing app stores and the value they derive from them.
To provide a comprehensive understanding of these key topics, MTM conducted an online survey with over 250 Japanese app and game developers, in September – October 2025. A series of factors were considered to ensure a broad cross-section of marketplace perspectives amongst the sample, such as including developers from a range of company sizes, monetization models and user bases.
Japanese developers overwhelmingly express exceptionally high satisfaction with major app stores, particularly Google Play, recognizing its significant value in driving user growth, ensuring security, and facilitating monetization.
There is strong, widespread support for the current app store business model, including that app stores should be able to earn revenue to invest in their services.
While Japanese developers see value in alternative in-app billing and external purchase options, they harbor substantial concerns about the practical realities, including security risks, user confusion and distrust, feature gaps, and the operational burden of implementation.
