What makes a cultural moment stick? And which media environments are best placed to create the moments audiences remember, share and talk about?

At this year’s DCM Upfronts, MTM CEO Caroline Wren took to the stage to share new research from MTM and Digital Cinema Media (DCM), exploring the role different media channels play in creating cultural relevance.

Based on a nationally representative survey of 1,500 people across Britain, we asked audiences to spontaneously recall the cultural moments that had grabbed their attention and sparked conversation over the previous 12 months.

Here are some of the biggest takeaways.

1. TV, sport and cinema remain powerful drivers of culture

When audiences were asked to spontaneously recall cultural moments, TV was the most frequently cited source at 23%, followed by sport at 21%, news at 20% and cinema at 10%. Social media trends accounted for just 5%.

Looking specifically at commercially available cultural moments, TV entertainment, cinema and sport were even more dominant – together accounting for 85% of the moments people remembered.

 As Caroline explained:

“TV, cinema and sport provide culturally memorable moments in part because they are relatively high-anticipation mediums that are associated with ‘talkability’ compared with social trends, which tend to be more fleeting.”

The finding points to an important distinction between generating attention and creating something that lives on in people’s memories and conversations.

2. Different media, different roles

Not every cultural moment looks the same. Some reach huge audiences, while others resonate deeply with smaller communities. Some arrive unexpectedly; others build anticipation for weeks, months or even years.

Our research shows that different media environments have distinctive roles within that landscape. Video-on-demand (VOD) and cinema can create buzzworthy moments that define the zeitgeist, while traditional UK broadcasters continue to sit at the heart of British culture. Social video, meanwhile, excels at producing highly personalised, relatable and fast-moving cultural moments.

For brands, that means cultural relevance isn’t simply about being present wherever attention is highest. It’s about understanding the type of cultural impact you want to create – and choosing the environments best equipped to deliver it.

3. Anticipation can make moments more memorable

One of the characteristics connecting TV, cinema and sport is anticipation.

A major film release can build excitement for months. Fans plan around major sporting fixtures. The return of a much-loved television series becomes an event in itself.

That anticipation creates fertile ground for conversation before, during and after the moment itself. It can help explain why these experiences remain prominent in audiences’ memories, rather than disappearing as quickly as many short-lived trends.

4. Cinema creates a distinctive environment for advertisers

The research also highlighted cinema’s particular strength as an advertising environment.

Compared with TV, streaming, social and online video, cinema scored highest for advertising that audiences felt did not interrupt their experience, as well as for openness to advertising and ad memorability.

Cinema advertisers were also more likely to be associated with qualities including “high quality” (67%), “relevant to me” (65%) and “category leading” (61%).

As Caroline puts it, cinema is “one of the few places where ads are welcome, actually.”

For advertisers looking to participate in culturally significant moments, the findings are a reminder that context matters. Reaching an audience is one thing. Reaching them somewhere they are engaged, receptive and ready to remember you is another.
